SWAG Cultural Event – April 2025

News Events Projects About Us English العربية Hamburger Toggle Menu Join Us SWAG Event  – Celebration of Sudanese Culture On Saturday, April 26, over 40 people gathered in Glasgow for a powerful and joyful celebration of Sudanese culture, organised by Sudanese Women Action Group (SWAG) in collaboration with Community InfoSource (CIS). The event brought together young Scots, and young Sudanese people, guardians, community organisers, and partner organisations in a vibrant afternoon filled with connection, reflection, and celebration. From the moment attendees arrived, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with music and refreshments setting the tone for what became a deeply meaningful event. The start of the event was slightly delayed to accommodate late arrivals, but eventually it got started and the event opened with remarks from SWAG and CIS representatives. One of the most moving parts of the day was the sharing of stories in the ‘Building Connections’ exercise, where attendees got the opportunity to connect and share personal stories with others whom they may not have spoken to otherwise. These discussions touched on migration, memory, and what it means to carry and pass on a cultural identity in the diaspora. The stories sparked heartfelt dialogue among participants, many of whom expressed how rare and valuable it was to have space for these conversations. Food, of course, played a central role in the event. Attendees were treated to videos and a presentation about Sudanese cuisine and Sudanese cooking, where and how to shop for ingredients in Scotland, variations across different parts of Sudan. This was topped off with traditional Sudanese food, lovingly prepared and shared together. The shared meal became a moment of quiet reflection, joyful exchange, and bonding – as it sparked memories in some and learning in others. There was also an opportunity for partner organisations to invite relevant attendees to their projects; OpenAye and Hip Hop Hurriya.  The event ended on a high note with Sudanese music and dancing. Participants of all ages and backgrounds joined in as we learned some Ceilidh and Sudanese dances and the room came alive with laughter, rhythm, and celebration. It was a beautiful close to an afternoon that honoured resilience, culture, and community. Sudan’s War Enters Third Year Amid Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

Two years ago, on April 15, 2023, war broke out in #Sudan leaving millions of civilians across the country suffering from the violence of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). More than 12 million Sudanese have been displaced after fleeing the fighting to seek refuge in makeshift camps where they face food insecurity, a health crisis and unbearable living conditions. Making Sudan the largest displacement crisis in the world who no one talks about. Women and girls are subjected to GBV on a daily basis and systemic sexual violence is being used as a weapon of war in Sudan — including against children as young as one, according to the UN. The media and the international community must make their voices heard! #TalkAboutSudan #KeepEyesOnSudan #GenderBasedViolence

This gathering facilitated open discussions, networking, and the exchange of ideas, which are crucial for building a strong, interconnected community that can support the Integration of Sudanese Youth in Scotland and the empowerment of Sudanese women in Scotland and abroad. A major highlight of the event was the formal launch of our partnership with the “Save Elgeneina Initiative”. The collaboration sets a foundation for fundraising, joint projects and sharing resources with the goal of providing essential support and advocacy for women affected by conflict and displacement.
